To Gary (The Legend),

I just want to say that guys like you are good for swimming, sport, your country, and the world in general. In the pool you have skill, and you use it to put on a show and inspire, out of the pool you seem to be one of those entertaining guys around whom there is never a dull moment, who uses his fame and legacy to good avail. Classy characters such as yourself are rare in swimming, I can think of only a few others currently around, Massi Rossolino, Lenny Krayzelburg, Alex Popov, who are top shelf swimmers with a certain style and poise.... This is why I urge your rare persona to remain in swimming as long as possible.

This "race club" which I take it you helped design, seems like a revolutionary idea for swimming, and it would be fantastic to see something similar pop up closer to where i live (australia). Here we only have the AIS (which I presume you've heard of) where I am invited to train from time to time, as well as other minor institutes, but nothing nearly as exotic as your centre in florida. I congratulate you on putting this marvelous idea into work, and should my times continue coming down, I hope that one day i might become a suitable candidate to spend some time training with you.

Best Regards, NIC (16 - Australia)

Gary,

Congratulations on The Race Club and the web site. I've been a fan for years and I'm looking forward to you and the team doing great at the
Olympics. One suggestion - you should have some way set up for people to contribute to the team, like an address to send money or a list of
things people who want to help could send. I'll buy some t-shirts and stuff when they're available, but it would be nice to send a few dollars here and there as well. Gives us little guys a chance to feel connected.

Mark, thank you for the suggestion. We will be posting all of that information very soon!

Hello Gary,

I heard that you designed the narly swim suits (with the floral patterns and bright colors) in one of the videos I've seen of you.

Is that true? If so, can you tell me where I can purchase a suit?

I live in Southern California. Thanks and all the best in your epic quest to Athens 2004. I look forward to seeing you battle the Russian Rocket Popov one last time.

William Choe

Reply From Gary:

Hey William,

Thanks for watching the videos and asking about the suits. Those suits were custom made for me, however we are designing suits right now that will match those that I have worn in the past. Keep an eye out and make sure they have my stamp of approval!

Best Wishes,

Gary

Hey Gary,
i've only been coaching four years (three in Italy, one here in WI), but i've had some real talent in my water already. Look for a kid named John Lyles coming up fast. I showed him tapes of your swims in 2000, both for stroke tips, and to break him out of his shell and inspire a bit of bravado in him.

He's since been the three time european military champ, and is swimming out on the east coast now, if you ever have a second, i know he'd love to get even a quick note from you, thanks for your time, swim fast, stay strong, you're an insperation,

I do not qualify to be on your team. However, I am a master swimmer and swim fan would like to attend a practice session.
Is this possible?

Gary:

With all due respect to the members of USA swimming, it seems that you are doing more to promote swimming than all other (US) swimmers combined. This can be partly attributed to good fortune - you are probably on of the few swimmers to ever be invited to Leno. But Leno never would have invited you if you were not the proactive and vocal person that you are. Therefore I conclude that USA swimming needs to do more than provide training camps and complex race analysis for its elite swimmers; USA swimming also needs to train the elite how to promote themselves and the sport. Do they make any efforts towards that? Or are they only focused on developing faster swimmers?

Gary, There hasn't been to much debate on this topic but there are drastically differing styles out there. Which is a better coaching style: Negative or Positive reinforcement. I once had a coach that insisted that I responded better to negative reinforcement during a training set. My response would always be, yeah, but for how long and how much damage does that do in the long run. Is a coaches job to make sure a swimmer is swimming the fastest at every possible moment or swimming fastest in the long run and enjoying the sport. I think you know my answer. The General Lee is coming soon!!! Scott

Just wanted to send my support for your new 'race club' and to say its about time. Its almost impossible to work my training around study and if you didn't know in New zealand, where I live, if your a swimmer you get *^%!

So hopefully your trend catchs on, and good luck with changing swimming into a pofessional sport.
You are now my idol.

Best of luck
Christian Burge
