Message: Dear Gary, hows it going?  i am a 16 year old swimmer, from texas, and i was wondering if you could help me out by giving me some ideas on diffrent workouts for sprinters. i just  cant seem to break out of my 23.54 barrier on my 50 fr. or my 53.54 in my 100 free and I thought that maybe you could help me out you see i get very frustrated sometimes because i see team mates of mine who dont work out hard and still excel. I know that if i keep working hard i'll get there, but i just was wondering if there is something that I can do to get some sort of edge..  some sort of strength training or flexibilty excercises , or some advice on starts and turns that you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.. it would be an honor to recive a response from you Mr. Hall.

thanks a bunch,

Aaron Contreras (Corpus Christi, Tx)

Gary's Response: Aaron,

i just  cant seem to break out of my (23.54) barrier

Barriers are mostly mental. This is a barrier that you have created. Try something different. What you have been doing has gotten you to where you are now. Life is all about adapting, and growing. That means learn from your mistakes AND your success. The only failure is the failure to learn from your past. We often torment ourselves over what we did wrong in the race when we go a bad time. Start exploring what you did wrong in practice months earlier, 95% of the time this has more to do with your performance than what you did in the water at the swim meet. Relive that great swim you've had mentally, in practice. Think about the race when you practice. Visualize it. See yourself succeeding in your next race. People ask me all the time what I'm thinking about five minutes before the race. There is nothing you can think about five minutes before the race that is going to ensure a great race. It's what you think about every day in practice that will make the difference in your next race. Try it.

My father was one of the hardest workers in the pool. Mark Spitz was considered lazy by many of his team mates. What Mark was better than anyone else at was swimming smart. He thought about the race. He was leagues ahead of his competition when it came to what can be considered today's standards in sports psychology. He swam to race, not to practice. He also beat my father.

So, my advice is to think about your race. Swim smart.

Message: You guys rock!

Congratulations on your success at Nationals. Do you have any tips for a 55 year old sprinter? My meet season is about to start. I did 23.8 (yards) 38 years ago. Now I'm up to 25.8 but I think I can go faster.

Gary's Response: Hey Jeremy!

There are a lot of masters swimmers swimming faster now than they did back in the day. I bet you enjoy getting in the pool as much or more than you did in the past! That's what it is all about... having fun. Also - owning a race club t-shirt and swim cap will defnitely help you swim faster.

Best wishes,

Gary
